Mothball Studio City?
All reports I've heard from our roving reporters on the ground on the Cotai Strip is that Macao Studio City is still semi-mothballed. Obviously, I'm not the only one who is curious what the deal is with this, investment analysts inquired about it's state during Melco Crown Entertainment LTD's most recent (and barely listenable) quarterly earnings call.
Quick aside - cmon MPEL... buy some phone headsets or stand closer to the conference call microphone! Jeeezus!
According to the wig bigs at MPEL, Macao Studio City is "still being worked on." Who knows if they were being coy or trying to not further distress their stock price or jeopardize their casino operating agreement with Macao Studio City (as if MCS had any other options) by addressing the white elephant that is MCS' stalled construction site.
Regardless of the questionable state of MCS, Taubman (part owner and operator of The Mall at Studio City) has announced some of its future tenants, an line up of the usual luxury suspects : Alfred Dunhill, Bvlgari, Burberry, Cartier, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Franck Muller, Gucci, Prada and Versace.
The latest time frame for opening is 2011. Don't bother looking on the Macao Studio City or MCS Mall sites for updates... they have been semi-mothballed as well.
If we've got any MCS execs or employees out there who wish to spill the beans (anonymously, of course) shoot us an email.
