Cotai Construction Feb 2008 Photo Update : Galaxy Megaresort, Sheraton, City of Dreams
I just gotta say, that you guys (and gals) are the best. I can't begin to say how continually surprised, shocked and psyched by all the great stuff that you send in to us. This weekend we've gotten a ton of photos of Ponte 16, MGM's public areas and some Cotai updates which I'm going to be posting after they've been cropped, resized and all that technical stuff. Lots of great stuff here, so let's get started.
The first items up for bid are Cotai Construction photos sent to us by reader Ace21, who was generous enough to pop into a bunch of the joints around town and take a bunch of pix.
The skin has started to be attached to the outside of the Galaxy MegaResort. It's going to look like a cross between Bellagio and Mandalay Bay when it's done. I hope they don't put the pointy Excaliburesque spires up on top, like are in some of the early renderings - they're cheesy, and might catch on fire.
I've been debating on and off with myself for six months exactly what these buildings are, Sheraton? Shangri-La? The Sheraton is a two-tower building, so I'm going to once again say these are the Sheraton, but will reserve the right to change my mind. Regardless, construction seems to be proceeding at quite a clip, looks like some of the Cotai Strip facing ground floor buildings are starting to come together (casino, retail etc.).
City of Dreams
The top photo is great for many many reasons. Beyond the framing and the lighting - which are fabulous - it puts City of Dreams into a bit of a post modernist view. I'm compelled to think that the City of Dreams' circular hotel tower - at least at this stage - is a direct reference to the famed Hotel Lisboa's Las Vegas Sands inspired circular hotel tower. An architectural nod to the past of Macau, while vaulting far into the future. Looks like a lot of the lower floors are progressing nicely as well, and some of the towers are starting to be skinned. This place is going to be gorgeous.
Construction is really taking off on Cotai, but I'm left wondering what the deal with Macao Studio City is. I truly doubt we're going to see it open in 2009 at the rate they are progressing. If anyone is heading over there in the next week or so, or can give us a verbal status update, send us an email or add a comment below.
Again, I'd like to extend my deepest thanks to Ace21 for sharing his photos with us on behalf of all of our readers. We'll be posting more of Ace's photos as well as some other submissions in the next day or two.
